Sir, a guy named Newport here bought Dallas 2 points down, laying chalk of -160.

Please explain to everyone here how SQUARE such a buy down is, and how such betting will send you on a first class ticket to the poor house.

Thanks Ted. Appreciate your input.

In all due respect, it is inappropriate for me to judge anyone's decision on how they wish to make their plays. I will pass no judgment on Newport's plays or anyone's plays on these forums. As long as he or anyone else can turn a long term profit, they should continue to do what is successful for them.

Now, regarding "sharps versus squares", as you know there have been many threads on this subject, generally in the Offshore Forum, and I have expressed in those threads my thoughts on what defines a "sharp" which, at times, is in contrast to many of the thoughts expressed by others including some of our most respected writers and posters. I would prefer not to repeat them here as, no doubt, this subject will continue to be raised regularly throughout the football season.

Let me conclude by offering that we consider not judging each other and respecting each other's rights and opinions. The sum of the total is far greater then the individual parts. Let's work together to make the RX forums better for all of us to be successful this season.

Enjoy the season together. Not fight and argue with each other. It will be a far more pleasureable season if we do so. It is our choice what we decide. I will choose to help and share when and where I can. I will leave others to make their own choices.

thank you ted. and i do not wish that you wish another poster. i merely ask for your objective opinion concerning buying down to 3 from 5 points, laying 60 cents. can you not provide an objective opinion about that method of gambling? or would you only be able to gauge the propriety of such betting on a case by case basis? Thank you sir.

I will only say that it is not something that I would choose to do, but once again, if it works for others and they can show a "long term profit" by doing so, them by all means they should follow their own methodology.

ID everyone TRULY knows that you are nothing more than a internet chat rat, that never gambles

And the fact that you involved someone else to try and support your claim

1. I bought the points to bring it back to the original line, and I stated that a more timely bet should have been done

2. I also bought the line down to a reasonable football outcome

3. I also ALWAYS buy down in parlays ESPECIALLY HOOKS and reduce my winning potential for more insurance. I use a BOOK that allows this.

4. I ALWAYS WILL BUY DOWN A MERE HOOK, and I am sure OLD MAN TED would agree why not pay ten cents to risk losing your bet on a FVKIN HOOK

YOU LOOK LIKE AN ASS.....

Now Old Man Ted in all respect to your desire not to speak of others betting prowess, as long as it brings long term profits

HAVE YOU EVER BOUGHT HOOKS ON LINES????

Please DO You even NEED to respond???.....No you do not!!

No one said "Mr I need an Indentity", that ONE should always buy 2 points.

Oh that's right the only booking you do is with your Uncle who runs the basement bar at the corner of "PISS" and "SHIT" in your local town.

Of Course REAL GAMBLERS BUY POINTS ALL THE TIME

I have three accounts where I rotate 5-8k through within a 4 months period. I surely will never say I gamble the most, nor do I desire. I will never say I am the biggest gambler or the most prestigious,

BUT ONE THING IS SURE "mr small time identity" I REALLY GAMBLE WITH MONEY........and you sir are a LOSER looking for NEEDY ATTENTION

God Bless You Sir and good luck with your life

Also Please address paying 60 cents

I am sure OLD MAN TED has bet a baseball game paying 60 cents. Is paying 60 cents on a money line in baseball a big deal.

OF COURSE NOT......TO A REAL GAMBLER

And did YOU know that once you take a spread off of the normal 10 cent line

It is "Technically called a MONEY LINE PLAY" regardless if there is still a spread invovled.

So get EDUCATED and try not to tarnish others in supporting Your ASS in your MOUTH disease.

36.5 aaaahahahahahaha

Newport:

My responses to Identity were presented in no way to disrespect you or any other poster as I stated it is inappropriate for me to past judgment on anyone. I am hopeful that everything has been working well for you no matter what methods you choose to use. Remember, I congratulated you on your win with Dallas over Oakland in NFL Preseason Week 2, while I was on the losing side. It is my desire to treat each poster with respect and hopefully receive the same in exchange. We are all here working together to try and share information that is useful in order that our posters, members and viewers may have a better opportunity of being successful. It has always been and will continue to be my sole reason for participating in the RX forums.

To specifically answer your question, I rarely bet baseball, primarily only during the playoffs, and when I do, I will either bet the moneyline or run line, depending on the situation and, yes, on a favorite would lay more then 10 cents at times.

As for buying points, I follow a basic principle of never buying points in basketball, even the hook, but will buy a hook in football for 10 cents on or off key numbers.

I hope this answers your questions and wish you the very best of success in the upcoming football season.

They only wrong doing I see, is, doing it in PRE SEASON. I would not bet a preseason game if they gave me +14pts on a 3pt favorite. JMO

Old Man,

I never thought for a second you were disrespectful. First off the question had nothing to do with who won, lost, or pushed last nights game.

So I need no congrats for a push, nor was I ever looking for any.

You have answered the question by Saying that you are not proficient in betting baeball, and you do it rarley, and when you do you bet the money line. Well my question have you ever bet baseball on the money line. You answered yes but rarley in the playoffs, therfore paying or receiving a price is not something you are accustomed to. And I am sure if you went back to some of your playoff baseball selections you probably payed a 60 cent price.

With that being said you also agreed to buying a hook in football. ANY REAL GAMBLER HAS DONE THIS..so no big surprise here.

So again, forget last nights game, but understand that you are agreeing that you have bought in NFL, and do not play much baseball

A few questions for you Ted

DO you think that this years NFL season is more volatile than years past, and that lines will not play as much of an impact at times, compared to the past. DO you find it interesting that there seems to be a trend of lines between 2-5 and that only 3 dogs covered this pre-season but did not win. But all other dogs won outright.

And also do you see a trend that only 5 games on the side were affected by the spread, 2 being pushes

Last questions

Also, being that 3 points is the most common victory margin in footbal, do you ever see yourself buying more than a hook to get to this common "3" victory margin number especially in parlays...that is if you ever play parlays

and do you primarily bet offshore or local book

thanks in advance for your responses

Newport:

Just to clarify before answering your questions. The game I was referring to was not last night's game but during Week 2 when Dallas scored a TD in the last few seconds to beat Oakland 21-20.

Now, on to your questions. It is too early to tell what to expect for this years regular NFL season. That being said, the NFL changed dramatically when free agency and the salary cap came into existence. It brought parity to the league, but with less team depth and over all quality of play. In gambling terms, this not only affected the lines but the consistency of play and thereby the ability to be successful consistently against the lines.

As for this preseason, it is quite common to see small lines varying between 2-5 points. This is more the norm then not. I believe the lack of dogs covering this preseason too date has been more the unusual and not the norm. The fact that most dogs that won, did so outright, is also the norm on small numbers. As to a trend, I would be careful not to draw any conclusions from the preseason as the strategy is completely different then the regular season as the coaches evaluate player personnel and try to protect their starters as much as possible from injury. The regular season must be evaluated on its own merits and will develop its own trends.

As to the 3 points, I never buy on or off of this particular number as the vig is too high. I either lay 2.5 or 3 or take 3 or 3.5. As for parlays, I very, very rarely play parlays as the actual percentage given to the house is too high. I would rather compound the wager from one to another then make a straight parlay wager. Saying that, I realize that some games overlap in time. I play perhaps 5 or less parlays per calendar year in all sports total.

Last, I primarily bet offshore.

I hope these responses provide the information you desired.

Thanks Ted

And I see you style and choosing.

I can tell you, that I have had success this year because of the options that have been offered at my offshore relative to buy ups and downs in parlays and in straight plays. And it is much more than in the past. I have played games where like last night I actually thought strongly that the line was going to fall between 3 and 6 and this is why I primarily bought the points, because I was more willing to risk, for a closer reality in this case. I have saved at least 4 parlays I can remember this year with pushes because of my buy downs. So you can see my chosing as well. Good luck this year in Football and we both can make some $$$$

And please I was never the one to state this is the norm, nor have evered said for someone to follow that style. I posted it, and then it was questioned by someone who actually had it blow up in there face. A person's post and play is their post and play....end of story. If you question, be prepared to professionaly defend. I realize that is impossible with a internet rat that never gambles. He has been warned, and that will make for a good season. Some policing. There was one time since I have been posting that I actually bought 5 points, but that was a hedge in the NCAA Championship Basketball game in March. I already had a future on Georgia Tech at 8-1 and Connecticut was favored by 5.5. I felt strongly that Connecticut matched up extremely well with Georgia Tech, so I bought the points for an amount to hedge my future thereby obtaining a positive return. That was a rare case. As I said, I don't normally buy points in basketball.
